Dhanteras
Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival and is considered an auspicious occasion in Hindu tradition. Celebrated mainly in India, it usually falls in the month of Ashvin (October or November) and marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations. The word "Dhan" means wealth, and "Teras" refers to the 13th day of the lunar calendar, signifying the day’s association with prosperity and good fortune. On this day, people worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and Ayurveda, as well as Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. It is believed that buying new items, especially metal objects like gold, silver, or utensils, on Dhanteras brings good luck and prosperity in the coming year. Homes are cleaned and decorated with rangolis and diyas (oil lamps), while devotees offer prayers for good health, wealth, and happiness. Dhanteras sets the tone for the upcoming Diwali festivities, focusing on the values of prosperity, well-being, and spiritual growth.
